Afroyanga Cultural Enlightenment Initiative popularly known as African & Proud (AP) is an NGO and group of volunteer Wikimedia editors who are committed to promoting and projecting Africa, Africans, and her culture, festivals, cuisines, quotes, and various African-related information to the world’s largest free encyclopedia and her sister projects. The most notable programs from African & Proud includes Culture Connect Africa, Afroyanga Bootcamp, Afro-Cuisine, WikiClassroom and others.
African & Proud: Community Manager
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Community Manager who is passionate about community engagement, digital collaboration, and the Wikimedia Foundation’s mission. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the Wikimedia movement, including Wikipedia and its sister projects, and experience in managing and growing online communities. As the Community Manager, you will be responsible for fostering a positive, inclusive, and active community of volunteers, editors, and supporters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Community Engagement:
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with existing community members (editors, contributors, and volunteers) to foster engagement and collaboration.
- Act as the primary point of contact for community members, responding to inquiries, addressing concerns, and providing support.
- Create and implement strategies for growing and engaging the community, with a focus on diversity and inclusion.
- Content & Project Development:
- Coordinate and support community-driven projects focused on increasing African content on Wikimedia platforms.
- Help organize virtual and in-person events, including edit-a-thons, training sessions, and community meetups.
- Support the development of educational materials and resources for new and existing community members.
- Communication and Advocacy:
- Develop and distribute newsletters, updates, and other communication to keep the community informed of key initiatives, upcoming events, and new opportunities.
- Advocate for the importance of African representation and participation within the global Wikimedia community.
- Collaborate with other Wikimedia affiliates, NGOs, and partner organizations to align efforts and strengthen the impact of our community work.
- Monitoring & Reporting:
- Monitor community discussions, identify emerging trends, and report on community health metrics and activities.
- Analyze feedback from community members and identify areas for improvement.
- Regularly report on community development efforts and key achievements to senior leadership and stakeholders.
- Conflict Resolution & Moderation:
- Maintain a positive and respectful atmosphere within the community, ensuring that members adhere to the organization’s code of conduct.
- Address conflicts or issues that may arise within the community, using diplomacy and constructive solutions.
- Training & Capacity Building:
- Provide training and mentorship to new community members, especially those unfamiliar with Wikimedia platforms or the NGO’s initiatives.
- Organize and facilitate webinars and workshops on Wikimedia editing, project management, and community building.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in community management, preferably in the nonprofit, digital, or open knowledge sectors.
- Experience working with the Wikimedia movement or in a related field (e.g., Wikipedia editing, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata).
- Proven track record of building and sustaining online communities.
- Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of the Wikimedia Foundation’s goals, policies, and the broader open knowledge ecosystem.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Proficiency in social media platforms and community management tools (e.g., Discourse, Slack, or similar platforms).
- Personal Attributes:
- Passionate about African culture, heritage, and empowerment through digital inclusion.
- A strong sense of initiative, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently.
- Diplomatic and solution-oriented with strong conflict resolution skills.
- Open to learning and adapting in a fast-changing digital environment.
- Wide experience with Wikipedia and/or sisters project
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience working with volunteer-driven initiatives or within a multicultural and diverse environment.
- Familiarity with other open-source platforms and content management systems.
- Knowledge of African languages, cultures, or regional digital ecosystems is a plus.
- Previous experience in organizing virtual events or webinars.
